Hanukkah Highlights from Heschel High School

Day 1/Night 2 - November 29, 2021

The High School's first communal candle lighting was something to truly celebrate as the students and faculty gathered as a full high school community for the first time in almost 2 years. The room was lit up  with glow sticks and the Heschel Harmonizers performed 4 songs.

Day 2/Night 3 - November 30, 2021

On Tuesday the GSA club invited Mordechai Levovitz, the co-founder and clinical director of Jewish Queer Youth (JQY), to share his story and a Hanukkah message. JQY is an amazing nonprofit in NYC that provides life-saving support and community to LGBTQ Jewish youth.

Day 3/Night 4 - December 1, 2021

The 4th night of Hanukkah, students gathered by grade for community bonding and candle lightings. Grade 9 participated in a Hanukkah themed Jeopardy trivia game written and led by the grade reps.  Grade 10 began the Hanukkah candle lighting event with a grade-wide "speed friending;" where they each got to talk one-on-one with a few different classmates and played a "Hanukkahoot" - a 20-question, Hanukkah-themed trivia. Grade 11 went to Wollman Rink in Central Park where they ice skated and drank hot chocolate, all while getting to bond as a grade. Grade 12 decorated AND are doughnuts, and spent time together as a grade before lighting the Hanukiyah together.

Day 4/Night 5 - December 2, 2021

In inter-grade advisories, High School students participated in a Hanukkah-theme Escape Room where students solved puzzles to “light” 8 candles and escape the virtual room. Our communal candle lighting featured our 11th and 12th grade bands.
