Dear Heschel Community,

On a regular day, I love being in the school buildings and seeing the way the Heschel mission comes to life for my children. And since October 7, being in the buildings has taken on an even deeper meaning.

I am uplifted by seeing and hearing students of all ages pray, talk, write, create and organize for Israel. I have been moved to see our teachers teach their students with the same love and thoughtfulness as always, despite the personal pain and worry so many of them are holding. And I have found comfort in our communal gatherings and been amazed at the many ways parents are caring for one another. A Heschel education and a community like ours is a precious gift, and that is true now more than ever.

In a typical year, our Annual Campaign enables Heschel to attract and retain the very best faculty and staff, to stay on the leading edge of academic and co-curricular programming, and to sustain our pluralistic and talented student body. These things are always critically important in pursuing the school’s mission, and they are powerfully important now. Please join me and make your gift today.

I am grateful to the administration, faculty, and staff who have nurtured a loving and stimulating environment where students can wonder, learn and lead—an environment where students express their love for Israel in the safety and security of our school.

I am grateful to all of you—Heschel parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends—for all that you do to support this special community, now and always.

Thank you for supporting our school this year and wishing all of Am Yisrael blessings of peace in the days to come.

SUPPORTING HESCHEL thiS YEAR

It has never been more clear why the world needs Heschel.

And Heschel needs you. When you give to Heschel’s Annual Campaign you provide the resources needed to attract, support, and retain our exceptional faculty and staff; admit and support our talented and diverse student body; and invest in the future of our unique education and co-curricular program. The Annual Campaign helps us bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Heschel education.

Heschel nurtures our students’ lifelong love of learning; creates an environment of academic excellence; builds an ethical learning community; inspires our students’ spiritual lives and Jewish identities; fosters our students’ love of and connection to Medinat Yisrael; and helps our students understand and practice the values of pluralism, tzedek (justice), and hesed (loving kindness). And as Heschel students graduate, they are ready, as one of our alumni recently put it, “to take on the world’s challenges in creative ways, year after year.” We are especially proud of our alumni, as we continue to hear stories of their smart and courageous leadership on their college campuses and professional workplaces.

FUNDRAISING AT HESCHEL

Heschel’s Annual Fund enables us to deliver on our mission for all of our students every day; capital fundraising keeps our buildings modern and safe; and our endowment secures the financial future of our school. At Heschel, our approach to fundraising is driven by our school’s commitment to pluralism and mission. Our goal is to tell the powerful story of our school and warmly invite parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, and friends to be part of the story. Heschel donors give because they are compelled by the school’s mission and our educators’ and administrators’ enactment of it. Our donors give to express gratitude, to celebrate, to commemorate, to honor, and to live their values. Heschel is Heschel because of you.

ANNUAL FUND

The Annual Campaign powers our overall annual fundraising and is the largest contributor to our Annual Fund total. Your annual fund participation (gifts to this annual campaign, gifts designated to our scholarship fund, gifts in memory or in honor of, and gifts toward the Annual Benefit), no matter when you make your gift, you will be recognized in two ways: you will be listed in the leveled listing released at the Annual Benefit in the spring of 2024*, and you will be listed alphabetically next fall in the campaign materials, as the 2022-2023 donors are listed here.

In our Annual Campaign we ask our parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends to make a gift to Heschel. A special and critical aspect of this campaign are our volunteers on the Campaign Committee and the Development Committee who ask members of our community by phone, email, and in-person to support Heschel. We encourage donors to give as early as possible in the Fall months because it helps Heschel with planning and budgeting.

*The purchase of Benefit tickets is in addition to your annual gift. Tickets will be on sale approximately 2 months in advance of the Benefit and are partially tax deductible. All community members who purchase Benefit tickets will be recognized on an additional list of Benefit Patrons.

HESCHEL’S MISSION

Abraham Joshua Heschel School is an independent Jewish day school named in memory of one of the great Jewish leaders, teachers, and activists of the 20th century and dedicated to the values that characterized Rabbi Heschel’s life: intellectual exploration, integrity, love of the Jewish people and tradition, and a commitment to social justice. The Heschel School is a pluralistic, egalitarian community that includes families from a wide range of Jewish backgrounds, practices, and beliefs. Boys and girls, men and women participate equally in all aspects of the school’s religious, intellectual, and communal life.

The Heschel School regards the texts of the Jewish tradition and the history of the Jewish people as fundamental resources for developing ideas, beliefs, behaviors, and values to shape and inspire the lives of individuals in our time. In an open and engaging academic setting, the school’s curriculum interweaves the best of both Jewish and general knowledge and culture throughout the school day.

The school’s approach to education is governed by profound respect for students. It nurtures their curiosity, cultivates their imagination, encourages creative expression, values their initiative, and engenders critical thinking skills. The school is committed to the development of the whole child and supports each student’s intellectual, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual growth. In addition, the school seeks to create an environment that encourages the professional and personal growth of teachers, administrators, and staff.

Among the central goals of the Abraham Joshua Heschel School are the following:

• Fostering a lifelong love of learning. The school seeks to develop the understanding that the discovery of personal meaning and the growth of individual identity can emerge from the rigors of study.

• Creating an environment of intellectual challenge and academic excellence.

• Creating an ethical learning community that inspires its students to become responsible, active, compassionate citizens, and leaders in the Jewish and world communities.

• Cultivating the spiritual lives of its students and the nurturing of their commitment to Jewish values. The school helps students learn about and respect a range of Jewish practices and encourages them to embody these traditions in the way they live their lives; students learn the skills that enable them to participate fully in Jewish life.

• Building of bridges between different sectors of the Jewish community, and between the Jewish community and other communities, as expressions of our religious imperative to unite human beings through justice, shared humanity, and mutual respect.

• Fostering in its students a deep commitment to and a lifelong relationship with the State of Israel and its language, culture and people, in recognition of the centrality of the State of Israel to Jewish identity and to the Jewish people.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

Timeline: 40 Years of the Heschel School

Throughout the ‘22-’23 school year we celebrated the Heschel School’s 40th anniversary.

The celebration culminated at the Annual Benefit Dinner on May 22 at Pier 60. We honored past and current Presidents of the Parents’ Association and Board of Trustees. Heschel’s pioneering educators and families, along with current and former parents, faculty, staff, trustees, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends came together to celebrate 40 years of our community pursuing the Heschel mission together. The evening featured a premiere viewing of the 40 Years of Heschel video, and an interactive, digital timeline that brought Heschel’s history to life through archival materials and first person accounts of Heschel’s founding and evolution.
